Summary/Abstract: On the basis of her research in Paris the authoress introduces some elaborations concerning Victor Hugo’s Appeal, published for the first time in the newspaper “Le Rappel” on August 30, 1876 and entitled “For Serbia”. In Bulgarian historical literature is accepted the view that the great French writer and democrat referred to the events in Bulgaria after the April Uprising because the author mentioned the notorious atrocities in the Bulgarian settlement of Batak. Studying the Appeal Z. Markova concludes that V. Hugo wrote this protest on the occasion of the Serbo-Turkish War of 1876, and the mention of the tragic event in Batak was due either to the lack of geographic information of the author with respect to the Balkans or to a slip.
