Summary/Abstract: Working with matter, in a state of ruin, an ahistorical form that exceeds any stylistic category contains at least a double lesson of architecture. It involves, on the one hand, the discovery of the remains, stripped of any surpluses, reduced to structural components and, on the other hand, a symbolic understanding of contents, themes or motifs that involves the acquisition of new keys to interpretation. Architecture’s role to interact through its new vocabulary with the slow but stable becoming of matter means opening a portal to an identity still incomprehensible to common people. The ruins project, although complex, becomes only sporadically a subject in the academic programme of an architecture student. Therefore, the article aims to identify, following a certain methodology, a possible path, referring to my diploma project - Forum Tevere, presented in July 2014, under the guidance of PhD Assoc. Prof. Arch. Anca Mitrache. The chosen site, an urban open wound along the river axis, represents an undeveloped entrance gate to the historic centre and a recent gap in the urban consciousness. The project reflects a quest to express the contemporary implications of urban stratification and the complex relations between ancient and recent past. The proposal seeks to integrate a new content into the urban structure identity, anchored in the past but participatory in the present.
