Summary/Abstract: The theme of our project is the sustainable development of tourism in Câmpulung through a comprehensive project focussing on the redevelopment of the route of the walkway which used to link Kretzulescu Park to “Mersi” Public Garden, and which includes the present-day City Council square and the famous “Pardon” Boulevard. The restoration of the buildings that belonged to the Baths in Kretzulescu Park has been achieved by functional reconversion, as set forth in the design theme put up to the School of Traditional Architecture, given the well-preserved architectural heritage of exceptional national value, which can serve as an example for the quests of contemporary architecture. In order to bring Câmpulung back to the atmosphere of the past century, when the town reached its apogee as a tourist resort with a well-established reputation in Europe, we have used as a theme quotes from literary writings, because the artistic sensibility of the writers captures most faithfully the spatial planning details. Thus, the pictures capturing scenes from the period seem to come to life and unfold as in a film, bringing back memories of a bygone age. We have found in the novel “Ultima noapte de dragoste, întâia noapte de război” (The Last Night of Love, the First Night of War), written by Camil Petrescu, a rich and beautiful description of the route of the walkway which constitutes the subject matter of our project, whereby the author has managed to depict and convey with subtlety and refinement the atmosphere of those times. We could paraphrase the title of the project entitling it “The last night of war, the first night of love”, since its main goal is to remove the effects of the communist interventions and revive the style and atmosphere of the interwar period, such revival intention being encountered in the majority of development policies of present-day Romania.
