50th Anniversary of the Institute of History

Summary/Abstract: The half-century long history of the Institute of History has been filled with the varied activity of three generation of historians who lived and worked in two epochs. It has consolidated as a national centre for historical research and for the publication of valuable series of sources. At the same time in it are trained highly qualified specialists in history, whose names become also known internationally. A celebration of the jubilee is an occasion to strike a balance of the development of the Institute as the principal centre of studying the centuries long development of the Bulgarian people and of its modest but original contribution to world history. The importance of the correct elucidation of the past and the value of historical experience have justified the preservation and change of the Institute in view of the irreversible processes in society. Although as constituent part of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, it has won the well-deserved recognition of its own image. The most important thing is to become aware of the need for the existence of the Institute of History, as a depository of the people’s memory and a centre of patriotism.
