Summary/Abstract: Unit-linked life insurance products have been launched in Poland since the 90s. Their characteristic feature is the advantage of the investment component over the insurance one. The structure of the products and the terms of the contract caused a number of controversies as to the effects of the investment. The article demonstrates if and how the rate of return on investment in a unit-linked life insurance product depends on its structure, and whether these products allowed to achieve higher rates of return than the rates of return achieve on investment in bank deposits. There were analyzed selected unit-linked life insurance products. For these products average annual historical rates of return from the funds have been calculated. The results were compared with an investment in a bank deposit. It was found that structure of the products affects on the result of the investment. It was also found that rates of return obtained from the analyzed products were low and in most cases did not compete with bank deposits. The compensation for the low efficiency of these products could not be covered by insurance component because in case of this category of insurance products it was limited to the minimum.
