Summary/Abstract: Thirty years after the outbreak of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we are once again confronted with horrific images of war on European soil, this time in Ukraine. This article describes the author’s personal experiences as a former refugee from Bosnia and Herzegovina and how refugees were treated in Germany in the early 1990s, including the similarities and differences to the treatment of refugees today. The author also establishes a connection to present times and points out the importance of the topic of reprocessing the war and creating a culture of remembrance.
