Summary/Abstract: Set against the background of the historical events between the two world wars, rises the figure of the patriotic physician Hristo Palamarev. Having obtained solid medical education in Munich, Dr Hristo Palamarev worked all his life for the welfare of his fellow citizens, for the educational and cultural advancement of his native town of Doupnitsa. Innovator in his medical practice, he introduced a number of therapeutic and diagnostic methods, set up his own laboratory for blood-count and for the study of biological liquids, his was also the first X-ray apparatus in the town. Dr Palamarev was an active member of the Bulgarian Doctors’ Union, he took an active part in its congresses and raised for discussion a number of topical questions. On the pages of the municipal paper “Svetlina” he published numerous articles on health care problems and on many questions concerning the citizens of Doupnitsa. A highly cultured person with all-round interests, Dr Palamarev maintained close contact with the most outstanding Bulgarian physicians and with eminent figures of Bulgarian culture. Subjected to repressions by the communist authorities in his native town, he settled in Sofia. At present the Doupnitsa public pays respect to their distinguished fellow-townsman.
