Summary/Abstract: The article examines the assessments and interpretations of the economic modernization of China in Bulgarian political science and historical literature over the last forty years. The political orientation of the authors is indicated as coming mainly from the left spectrum, and their research tasks are focused on comparison with the Bulgarian model of modernization under socialism and in democratic conditions. The issue of the connection between the theory and the practice of modernization in China since the times of Deng Xiaoping and the subsequent Chinese leaders is taken into consideration. Attention is also paid to the assessments of China’s geopolitical future with a view to the further modernization development. The author concludes that from the late 1980s to the present day there has been a predominance of positive and optimistic assessments of China’s economic modernization in Bulgaria.
