Summary/Abstract: The new 26th issue of Eastern European Countryside includes: a) studies on the rural communities elaborated by researchers in national academic communities from Eastern and Central Europe; b) documents, investigations, research reports and materials concerning the factors that determine the future of rural areas in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) space; c) the “Review and information” section discusses the scientific legacy of the outstanding work “The Polish Peasant in Europe and America” by William I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki, and Franciszek Bujak’s works. In what follows I suggest three directions of discussion, in a comparative perspective, these studies, which are thematically connected by the monographic method concerning rural areas in five CEE countries: 1) the profile of the monographic method; 2) the monographic approach and the challenge of theoretical reflection; 3) perspectives of monographic analysis for the present‑day development of rural areas in the CEE space.
