Summary/Abstract: The present article gives an overview of a series of issues regarding the aspectual verbal pairs, with emphasis on the way these pairs are established given the numerous difficulties that the aspectual pairs pose: the possibility the verbs have of combining with several prefixes, the existence of base verbs that have multiple meanings, and therefore different aspectual pairs depending on their meaning, meanings of some imperfective verbs that their perfective pair does not have, as well as the fact that the aspectual pair are not consistently mentioned in the Croatian dictionaries and grammar books. We present the main modalities in which the aspectual pairs are formed, the imperfectivisation and the perfectivisation, and we also point out the aspectual asimetries (bi-aspectual verbs or verbs without an aspectual pair) with observations referring to the phases of verbal derivation.
