Summary/Abstract: The identity of a nation is a continuous process, subject to evolution and transmutation. Its characteristics and national archetype may considerably vary in time according to external and internal influences. The present article analyses the representations of the Russian people from two different perspectives: Russians depicted by foreign travelers, writers, politicians, who had the chance to come into contact with this people, and the nation as seen from within by Russian philosophers and thinkers. Thus, it is quite challenging to notice how much the “internal” representation resembles or, on the contrary, differs from the “external” one. Also, the study encompasses different periods of time in order to reveal the transformations and changes which have been shaping the identity of this nation.
