The Norm in the Lexicon of the Modern Slovenian: Compounds and Abbreviations/Acronyms

Summary/Abstract: Lexicon as an aggregate of lexemes of a certain language is a changeable entity. New words for items, conceptions, etc. are constantly becoming part of it. They originate from one’s mother tongue and from foreign languages. Word-formation is the most productive way of creating new words in Slovenian. Two word-formation phenomena have been analised. At the time they had been new to Slovenian they had both been rejected from the normative poin of view, but they stayed in the language and are now ever more productive. We are talking about compounds coined of two nouns as in kinospored, which are mostly written apart (kino spored), this beeing encouraged by the state as it is presented in the Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika and Slovenski pravopis 2001. The second phenomenon are the compounds, coined of an abbreviation/acronym and a noun as in UKV-omrežje, which also belong to the same word-formation group. In addition abbreviations/acronyms themselves as well as the compounds with them are more and more common in the Slovenian terminology. It has also been noticed the abbreviations/acronyms already being a part of the Slovenian terminology are mostly borrowed from English language.
