Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this present study is to examine the gender roles in 19 stories in Sait Faik Abasıyanık's book "Şahmerdan", which is accepted as one of his early works. This study, in which the stories are analyzed in the context of gender roles, is structured with a qualitative research approach. Data on gender roles in “Şahmerdan”; has been collected in 4 categories by means of the number of male and female characters in the stories, their occupations, their roles inside and outside the home, and their personality traits and the data has been interpreted with the descriptive analysis method. The results has showed that the female characters are given less space than male characters, there are limited occupational roles for female characters, the variety of occupations increases for men, while the share of domestic roles is higher for female characters, male characters have a large share in roles outside the home, there are also weaker characteristics for women and stronger qualifications for men in the stories. The findings show that Sait Faik Abasıyanık reflects the society's view of women and men and the gender roles imposed on both men and women through various life impressions with a critical point of view in his works.
