Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the image of the celebration of Purim, in the Jewish quarter along the Danube, in the modernist novel Newcomers written by Milutin Uskoković. The research was carried out within the theoretical framework of Bakhtin’s theory of carnival. The empirical image of the celebration of Purim is viewed as an artistic representation of the reality of Sephardic Jews in Belgrade. We also see the significance that the holiday had for the Jewish community in Belgrade and the Sephardim who lived there as a (literary) testimony of one community, one time and one neighborhood that no longer exists.
