Summary/Abstract: Japanese-Hungarian cultural relations look back on a considerably long history, and the same holds true for literary translations as well. Unfortunately, however, there has been a remarkable shift of emphasis in this field toward modern (20th c.) and contemporary literature. As a consequence, the masterpieces of Japanese literature covering more than 1000 years (from the 8th to the 19th c.) are available in Hungarian only to a very limited degree. The purpose of this paper is to help fill this gap by presenting a selection from one of the most famous representatives of zuihitsu (“literary essay”), a medieval (14th c.) Japanese genre of prose. Although the social and cultural circumstances in which Kenkō, a Buddhist monk, penned Tsurezuregusa (Essays in Idleness) may seem remote in space and time, the emotions and thoughts that can be gathered from its lines have in most cases preserved their freshness and stood the test of time until our days.
