Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to try to show that there are some important conexions between two important concepts, which, though not so at the first sight, pertain to the way the modern world is constructed. This two concepts are sovereignty and utopia. Though they refer themselves to different realities, they nevertheless share a common ground, a ground that is present in the imagination of man. These concepts are relate because they refer also to the political and social domain and because they refer also to the way in which these domains and problems there within are thought and felt. Sovereignty is from the 17.th century onward a key concepts for modernity and so is also the concept of or utopia. The concept of sovereignty smacks off the political and is usually presented and understood in the context of international relationships. The concept of utopia is understood as pertaining to the domain of imaginary, ireal, literature, but also to politics. Both concepts have with politics to do, but also with the way we understand man, mankind and its position and relationship with the world. The papers shows that both concepts do intersect in some respect, because utopia is more than a cultural product. It is an anthropological constant, present in man, a (distorted) way to use the powers of imagination, so that man achieve the control over his social existence and also over the nature.
