Summary/Abstract: Labour Day was a competitve feature between the Polish Socialist Party (PPS) and the Communist Party of Poland (KPP) in the Second Polish Republic. Since there was a very big military garrison in Łódź, many actions of the communists were directed against the army on that day. They were run by the Central Military Division of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Poland (CWW KC KPP), commonly referred to as “wojskówka”. The military authorities were fully aware of the intentions of the communists and were effective in opposing them, among others during May Day manifestation. The largest of that sort of celebrations co-organized by the KPP took place in 1936. Around 25 000 people took part. For this reason, the Łódź garrison was put onhighest alert. Fortunately, there was no escalation in violence and it was unnecessary to use the army.
