Summary/Abstract: In April 1917, the Romanian Government sent a Patriotic Mission to the United States in order to intensify propaganda for the cause of Transylvania and to organize a unit of Romanian Transylvanian volunteers for the French front. The election of Vasile Lucaciu was not accidental. His son Epaminondas had settled in Cleveland. After a two-month trip through Russia and Japan, the Romanian delegation consisting of Vasile Lucaciu, Vasile Stoica and Ioan Moța arrived in Washington on June 29, 1917. On July 2, 1917, the delegation was received at the White House by the Secretary of State Robert Lansing. Members of the delegation contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Secretary of State William Phillips discussing the possibility of setting up a legion of volunteers. The “Romanian Patriotic Mission” was well received by all Romanians in the United States, by cultural and philanthropic organizations and by the Romanian press overseas, among which we mention the newspapers “America” and “Libertatea”. In the present study we will focus on the first large public events attended by members of the Patriotic Mission. These are the great gatherings of Youngstown (Ohio), Detroit (Michigan) and Cleveland (Ohio), described in detail in the newspapers “America” and “Libertatea–The Liberty”.
