Summary/Abstract: The numerous critical moments that characterized the twentieth century triggered deep existential anxieties that troubled the mind and sensitivity of artists. The profound influence they had on Aurel Popp spilled over into his entire artistic works, and all the lived realities were rendered through the aesthetic and personal filter of the artist. All the experiences he had gone through since his youth induced a consciousness of death that challenged him to seek new meanings of life and to highlight all the important things in life. Arising from the artist’s beliefs that art “is not only meant to please but also to educate”, the purpose of these images is to provoke the viewer to reflect on the ephemerality of human life and his imminent death. The artist uses the subject of death to create works of art with various antimilitaristic, social, religious, or historical themes, to communicate a message to both his contemporaries and posterity, because the core concerns regarding the human being remain forever relevant. Thus, by presenting the horrors and injustice in the world, his art militates for peace, justice, understanding between people, appealing to human reason for the purpose of truth and universal good.
