Summary/Abstract: The second book, dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Raina Katsarova’s birth, written by Ventsislav Dimov, is part of a series of scholarly events organized by the Institute of Art Studies to process and showcase its Folk Music Archive. It contains a monographic text and a CD with 153 sound examples of the early field audio recordings of Raina Katsarova (mastered by Alexander Nushev). The publication is yet another success for Ventsislav Dimov in his nearly 20-year work in the field of sound recording and media music, where he is a pioneer in many respects. In the monograph, Ventsislav Dimov provides detailed information and analyses the early practice of sound recording of Bulgarian folk music in the country that used to be applied by Raina Katsarova. The pre history of the process gets revealed as well as the contents of these early recordings (1595 units) plus the main features of her work as a whole. Especially interesting are the sections dedicated to particular individual amongst the recorded informants and the dynamics of folk music in Bulgaria in the 30s and 40s of the 20th century. The meaning of all these live voices of tradition for rethinking it today confirms the great work of Raina Katsarova as a founder of both sound recording practices in Bulgarian ethnomusicology and musical folklore.
