Summary/Abstract: This book is a sort of homage to Raina Katsarova, one of the most accomplished and well-known figures in the national and world history of ethnomusicology. Both forewords (the first one by her son Geo Kukudov and the second by Lozanka Peycheva and Ventsislav Dimov in co-authorship) present her biography and a summarized overview of the book. The content is divided into two parts. The first is dedicated to the scholarly biography and work of Katsarova. The initial two chapters in it are authored by Lozanka Peycheva. They contain a detailed analysis and evaluation of Raina Katsarova’s scholarly work (her presence as a fieldworker, her subject areas of research and the periodisation of her activities), whereas the third and fourth chapters, written by Ventsislav Dimov, describe and analyse Katsarova’s fieldwork and field audio recordings as well as her mission in applied ethnomusicology. Particularly interesting is the second part, which comprises four chapters with documents and materials, all part of Katsarova’s epistolary heritage accompanied by visual evidence. One of the chapters eloquently presents statements and opinions about Raina Katsarova by colleagues and fans as well as by musical folklorists and ethnomusicologists (Elena Stoin, Nikolay Kaufman and others). Thus, this work also depicts, to an extent, the development of scientific studies into traditional music in Bulgaria. The book re-establishes Raina Katsarova as a key figure in the growth of Bulgarian ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology, and is itself a truly valuable contribution to the Bulgarian musical science.
