Summary/Abstract: In the middle of the 20th century, the interest of the Bulgarian audience was focused on a repertoire of exciting melodiousness (operetta songs and popular tunes). The public felt the need to continue the lyrical and romantic thematic line of the old city songs in a popular fashion by mastering the gentle beautiful singing (bel canto). That was a good prerequisite for the influence of styles and genres characterized by gracefully arranged tones. A prime example is the Italian Musica Leggera (literally translated as “light music”). The first Bulgarian pop singers (who had not yet fully formed their performing style due to the lack of sufficient original Bulgarian pop songs and the fact that they could easily manage the foreign language repertoire coming through the new media, such as radio, television, record companies) adopted the Italian song models of Musica Leggera, the Russian romances and French chansons, then prevalent in national broadcasting. At a time when authorial Bulgarian songs were taking shape, the melodious Italian song filled the gap between the audience’s increased interest in popular music and the small output of new production. The Bulgarian public liked the new trend which found a warm welcome in singers’ repertoire and charged composers with creative energy.
