Summary/Abstract: This approach of the fragment of l’OEuvre au noir illustrates how pragmatics can enrich the literary analysis by adding new interpretations. The main tool of analysis is the act of speech, which, as micro-unit of the discourse, helps us identify the levels of conversation: the surface level (secondary speech acts required by the social standards at the Court of France) skillfully disguises the deep level of primary acts of rejection and request. The approach provided by pragmatics helps us visualize the conversation structure in a particular type of discourse, characteristic for the 16th century French Court.
