Summary/Abstract: The failure of the Somali state is a serious threat to the African security, as the territory represents as a safe haven for Islamic terrorism. Since collapse of the communist regime in 1991, the Islamic radicals started gaining popular support, rapidly obtaining control of large areas of the country. This paper analyzes how the Somali Islamic radicalism evolved over the last 30 years and how it became a threat to international security with al-Shabaab operating outside of its borders of. The focus of this research is the context in which Somali Islamic groups have emerged, with a specific emphasis on the purpose of these organizations, their modus operandi and the way they acquired increasing popularity and support amongst people outside Somalia, foreign Islamic networks and even other countries.
