Summary/Abstract: Recent crisis with the US, such as US’ withdrawal of its troops from Syria and Afghanistan without consulting European Allies, and declaring AUKUS project that excluded the EU, have intensified Europeans efforts to accelerate the process for the strategic autonomy. Amid these crises, the EU started outlining Strategic Compass that lays the basis of the autonomous security and defense policy of the EU and endorsed the document in March 2022. Opposed to the expectations, endorsed in the middle of Russian - Ukrainian warfare, the document clearly highlighted Europeans desire to decouple from the US and NATO although many members have been underlining the importance of the US’ assurance as well as NATO’s role for their security in front of the growing Russian threat.
