Summary/Abstract: Syrian refugee women's participation in the labor market after forced migration and gender roles. The study, carried out in Mersin, İzmir, and Gaziantep in 2019, is based on interviews with 48 women from different social and ethnic backgrounds who had to migrate from Syria to Turkey. Field research using qualitative research methods has shown that Syrian refugee women's entry into paid work is due to the necessity to earn a living for the household. The entry of women into the labor market by stepping out of their traditional roles also opens up space for negotiating traditional gender relations inside and outside the home. Pressure from the social environment, and fear of undermining the “family honor” and social values when Syrian women enter paid employment outside the home constitute an important line of tension. The findings of this study demonstrate that although earning income through work creates the expectation of recognition outside the home, improvement of social status, and empowerment for women, paid work brings additional burdens in women's daily lives and creates new areas of tension and violence based on gender.
