Crimes Committed and the Sanctions Encountered by Tradesmen in the Ottoman Period

Summary/Abstract: Tradesmen in the Ottoman Empire presents itself as a model that aims to meet the needs of the people without any problems, and while doing this, includes all stages from the production of goods and services to consumption, and operates in an orderly manner within the framework of the rules determined by the state. During this period, the State kept the trade unions under control. It is important to examine from a legal perspective some rules that tradesmen must comply with while performing their profession and the obligation to comply with them. In particular, it is necessary to determine the problems on-site so that the relevant authorities can produce deterrent solutions against the crimes committed by the tradesmen. In this direction, the crimes committed by the Ottoman tradesmen and the sanctions they faced have been examined in this study. The main purpose of the study is to reveal the crimes committed by the tradesmen and to emphasize the sanctions they have encountered as a result. For this purpose, this study has performed in an effort to clarify it by giving examples from various cities, especially the capital city. The most common crimes observed in the Ottoman tradesmen community include the lack of attention to quality and officially fixed prices, and irregularities especially in the basic needs of the people.
