Summary/Abstract: The paper presented at a special session on Adam Podgórecki's Empirical Sociologyt of Law aims at presenting the context and main contents of Podgórecki's theory. As to the intellectual genealogy it points to the interwar Warsaw-Lwów Polish philosophical school which dominated the mid-20th century thinking of those in academia who were independent from official Marxist and Catholic philosophies. Through this school Podgórecki also interpreted L. Petrażycki's original theory of law and science, developing his own approach. With time, Petrażycki's theory served as departure for the grounded theory approach interacting between empirical investigation and theoretical reflection. The empiricist stand enters in conflict with the normative-rational approach to the science of law-making developed systematically by Podgórecki as well. Finally, the ambitious project of mega-sociology is mentioned which openly added global ethics as part of the sociology or anthropology of law.
