Emerging from Troubled Waters: Brut Productions and Gender Creativity

Summary/Abstract: Drawings of patients in psychiatric hospitals, illustrated stories of great solitary people, carnival performances inseparable from precarious life: what was called art brut in the 1950s can today serve to transform our ways of imagining and living in society. By bypassing the classical interpretations of brutes works that disturb the norms of genres, we propose in this article to put the imaginary at the service of a situated experimental practice, never innocent, and always in touch with the institution and the obsolescence of its norms.
