Summary/Abstract: The article examines the issues of the scientific and research component in the professional activity of a teacher in higher educational institutions of the USA. It has been established that the need to do scientific and research work in the U.S. universities is determined by several factors: the rapid growth of science-based technologies and their financial support, the growing needs of highly qualified teacher-researchers, increased state support for higher education in the aspect of scientific research and replenishment of scientific and teaching staff, the modernization of higher education in the United States. It has been substantiated that the scientific and research work of university teachers includes: – activities related to the discovery of new knowledge or revision of known scientific models and principles; scientific activities aimed at the integration of knowledge, which involves the interpretation of scientific knowledge in an interdisciplinary context, establishing relationships between different branches of knowledge; activities aimed at applying knowledge, – determines the search of ways to use theoretical knowledge to address practical societal problems; scientific activities aimed at learning (dissemination of knowledge, its transformation and expansion).
