Summary/Abstract: The present study aims to report the results of a language needs analysis conducted on Romanian undergraduates who choose to study Spanish for beginner level (A1*) as an optional discipline at The Bucharest University of Economic Studies. The analysis aims to identify students’ purposes of choosing the mentioned course as well as their perception on the contents that should be included in the syllabus Two different sources were used in collecting data, namely interviews with students who completed the course in the previous years, followed by a questionnaire filled in by 60 newly enrolled students. The triangulation research method was completed by other sources of information such as the university international relations office as well as the professional and transversal competences the students should acquire at the end of the course. The findings indicate that a large part of the informants aim to take part in international mobility programmes contrary to the low number of the ones that actually did in each of the previous years. On the other hand, the instrumental motivation related to occupational purposes is also prominent in Spanish beginner undergraduates.
