Summary/Abstract: Rudolf Franz Ferdinand Hoess was sentenced to death by the Supreme National Tribunal in Warsaw on 2 April 1947. At the request of former prisoners of Auschwitz, the execution was to take place at the former death camp of which Hoess was the creator. The last two weeks of the SS man's life were spent in Wadowice where he made his act of conversion and reconciliation with God. While in Wadowice prison, the commandant wrote letters to his wife and children but also a "Declaration/Statement" in which he asked the Polishnation for forgiveness of his crimes. The article, based on sources from various archives, is an attempt to recreate the last days of Rudolf Hoess - everyday life in a small-town prison in the 40s, guards and the prison authorities approach to the criminal, and finally the circumstances of his transport from Mokotów to Wadowice and his convoy to the place of execution.
