Summary/Abstract: In his extensive correspondence, Gustave Flaubert expresses a number of opinions and writes his fantasised autobiography, which he stages by directly involving his authorial self in epistolary situations where captatio benevolentiae leads him to put forward either a suffering self or a self experiencing strong emotions. He thus seeks to create an epistolary identity for himself, to create a “Flaubert” trademark.
