Summary/Abstract: Perilous is perhaps too strong a word for an endeavour that did not involve actually getting shot at, although some metaphorical backstabbing was an occupational hazard, and it could be a career killer. Nevertheless, Machiavelli’s quote is largely apt. His work The Prince — often seen as a textbook for cynical and cunning manipulation, hence Machiavellian—was in fact a world-weary body of advice to a young prince on the realities of rule. As such his warning about the perils of ‘change management’ is an all too accurate description of the project that has been bringing Strategic Communications (StratCom) into the heart of NATO.
