Summary/Abstract: It should be noted that the author of this beautiful and well-documented work looks at the subject with comprehension, with sympathy, emphasizing - with the required objectivity - both the bright and the obscure aspects of Byzantine civilization. Obviously, his appreciation, placed precisely in the Introduction (p. 13), is judicious, namely: “... the modern Western world, which developed from Europe, would not have existed if it had not benefited from the shield and inspiration of what was happening further east in Byzantium.
