Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the problem of negotiation of gender rules with-in a conservative Roman Catholic women’s community. The analysis is based on qualitative research conducted in 2019 and 2020 and is embedded in the theoretical concept of agency which is understood as a multifaceted phenomenon. Practices of negotiation of gender patterns are analysed in the context of two fields particularly important for the community, i.e. motherhood and the role of female body. The analysis reveals that gender rules can be simultaneously reproduced, reinterpreted and undermined so that religious women’s agency should be framed as a multidirectional phenomenon and that within the processes described in the article not only patterns of womanhood are negotiated but also understanding of the religious.
