Summary/Abstract: This study presents an overview of the activity of one of the most controversial military subdivision - the French Foreign Legion, widely known as one of the most effective military units in the world on the one hand and also as a military detachment operating on the principles of activity of mercenaries, being composed in the vast majority of foreign citizens with lacking transparency background. The research presents historical aspects of the appearance and development of the Legion and the concept of its activity during the recent period. At the same time, the investigation allowed us to find that the cadency of mercenaries activity development in the contemporary world, oftentimes offers opportunities to this phenomenon to obtain legal forms of exitence, which is proven by the high level of demand for employment in this military unit by recuits from all over the world.
