Summary/Abstract: Romania’s new international status after 1878 conferred it the right to develop its own defence policy, whose main goal was the consolidation of independence and the maintaining of peace in South-Eastern Europe. Consequently, steps were taken towards the creation of an efficient defensive system, adapted for the geostrategic configuration of the country. In October 1882, at the personal invitation of King Carol I, General Henri-Alexis Brialmont arrived in Bucharest in order to prepare the defences of the newly independent Romania. The paper below details the sinuous path from inception to completion of these defences.
