Summary/Abstract: The present study follows the attitude of Great Britain towards the question of southern Bessarabia in 1878. After the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, Russia re-annexed southern Bessarabia, although it had guaranteed the territorial integrity of Romania through the 1877 convention. Great Britain was the power in which the Romanians had high hopes, in terms of preserving southern Bessarabia. Although he had supported Romania to keep southern Bessarabia, behind the scenes the Great Britain reached an agreement with the Russian Empire, by which the London cabinet recognized the re-annexation of southern Bessarabia. An argument ensued in the British Parliament over this Russian-British agreement, a number of speakers pointing out that Britain sacrificed southern Bessarabia.
