Summary/Abstract: Shaykh Abu Madyan is one of the most influential spiritual teachers in the Islamic West. He had a particular influence on Muhyiddin ibn Arabi who wrote a poetic commentary (tahmīs) on one of Abu Madyan’s most popular qasidas. This qasida by Abu Madyan, whose main theme is a nice relationship with the brothers on the spiritual path and with the spiritual master (adab), was the inspiration for many commentaries, but Ibn Arabi’s commentary stands out for its beauty and sophistication of poetic expression.
