Summary/Abstract: Fahruddin Razi is one of the most important Islamic scholars of the classical period, primarily known for his extensive tafsir and works in the field of speculative theology (‘ilm al-kelām). Over time, his rationalist approach to religion became proverbial in Sufi circles, which had viewed rationalism in religion with suspicion. In a letter sent to him by Ibn Arabi, one of the greatest Sufi authorities of his time, we find a comparison of different epistemological approaches typical of the classical ‘ilm al-kelām and tesawwuf, as well as an exposition of the basic themes of Sufi metaphysical thought.
