Summary/Abstract: The dynamics of changes taking place in the 19th century influenced the perception of the institution of marriage, as well as the role of a woman and a man in a relationship. Then prevailing norms and proprieties limited the decision-making of the young, although not all couples adapted to this model. The transformations taking place in attitudes toward marriage at that time can be seen in the handbooks as well as private documents.
