Summary/Abstract: The essay aims to reveal scholarly background and research culture of prominent South Slavic writer of the early 15th century called Constantine of Kostenets in Bulgarian and Russian academic literature and Constantin the Philosopher – in Serbian and Macedonian works. Analyzing the main Constantine’s works – Treatise on Letters and Life of Despot Stefan Lazarevich – the author stresses those traits of the two works which respond to academic approaches, practices and procedures of his time. The Treatise is considered as project application or qualification work which probably did not succeed while the Life is treated as an officially ordered work. The author comes to conclusion that Constantine should be represented as a secular medieval Orthodox intellectual more than part of the Despot’s court environment or clerical circles.
