Summary/Abstract: The modern development of criminal sanctions in recent decades more and more emphasizes the establishment of new alternative penalties with which it will be able to achieve all the elements of the purpose of punishment and in addition will significantly reduce or completely remove all the possible negative effects of the existing criminal sanctions, primarily imprisonment. This study will give a review of contemporary trends in the application of criminal sanctions and the system of their enforcement, starting with the consideration of the basic characteristics of the European criminal law, and special attention will be attended to the historical development of the system of criminal sanctions and their enforcement. All questions previously stated will be further discussed in a concise comparative presentation of alternative sanctions in some of the Member States of the European Union.
