Summary/Abstract: The paper puts forward a proposal for a cultural definition including three types of features relevant for meaning description – identifying ones, pertaining to the referent of a given lexical item, cognitive ones that have to do with the lexical item’s linguistic characteristics, and cultural ones, concerning the emotional state of a language user triggered by the use of the word within a speech act. All these features are inseparable from the culture of a given speech community, and its impact on attitudes that in turn shape communication. The arguments presented in the paper are illustrated with an analysis of Polish lexemes okno (‘window’) and drzwi (‘door’), which takes into account lexicographic descriptions, conceptualizations constitutive for the worldview, as well as the motive of windows and door as it is depicted in selected works of literature, art and music.
