Chronological Shifts in Wielki słownik języka polskiego PAN: Selected Issues

Summary/Abstract: The author examines methodological issues concerning the dating of entries in the digital-only “Wielki słownik języka polskiego PAN” (available at www.wsjp.pl). While searching for “birthdates” of particular words, the creators of this valuable source, under construction at the moment, focus on dictionary sources. Unfortunately, these are mainly monolingual dictionaries and only rarely multilingual dictionaries or (which is even more important) texts that do not come from dictionaries, e.g. literary, scientific, press, etc. Determining the chronology of Polish vocabulary continues to be a challenge that requires considerable scientific effort.
