Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to exploring the actual status of expressions which are usually treated as various types of affixes, i.e. word-formation exponents. The methodological basis of the study are the works of Andrzej Bogusławski, where the principle of proportionality (raised by F. de Saussure and L. Wittgenstein to the rank of the central language mechanism) was consistently reflected. In the first part of the article, the author polemically refers to the relevant theses of Sebastian Żurowski, while in the second she proposes positive solutions. Some of the expressions considered as affixes are independent lexemes, others are operational units and as such belong to the grammatical rather than to lexical language system. Selected examples representing both types of the distinguished units are presented in the article. According to the author, Polish operational grammar requires extensive and systematic research, which could result in its detailed elaboration.
