Summary/Abstract: The author discusses the status of Polish language varieties used in the former Kresy region, i.e. in the areas currently located outside the eastern border of Poland, namely in Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Ukraine, as well as terminology used to refer to these varieties. She proposes to treat Polish used in the Kresy region as a territorial variety of the language in a broad sense of the term, comprising dialects, regional variant of general language and the so-called urban dialects. In terms of terminology, a suggestion put forward is to use a chronological distinction between the names of the Polish language used in this region, naming former historical variants of this variety of Polish as “the Polish of Kresy”, while the contemporary linguistic reality determined by the political changes in this region may be labelled “the Polish language in Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Ukraine”.
