Summary/Abstract: While there is no relative clause conjunction in the Japanese language, the presence of various grammaticalizations and nominalizations of the so-called formal noun tokoro ‘place’ is noteworthy. Within its numerous syntactic functions clearly visible are semantic shifts from the spatial-location meaning towards a temporal or situational meaning, as well as from the concrete meaning towards an abstract meaning. Such nominal uses of tokoro substantially enlarge the scope of syntactic relativization within the structure of Japanese complex sentences.
