Summary/Abstract: The text explores the question of similarities in valency position marking among Central European languages. The issue is approached empirically - with an extensive database of valency patterns. To avoid bias in favour of Central European patterns, other languages are also included in the comparison. The descriptive statistical method used here is affinity analysis. The article deals in detail with three groups of corresponding valency markers in the case of which one can claim Central European areal patterns. The semantics behind the observed patterns is also explored, pointing to otherwise unnoticed features that seem to be reflected in the grammatical marking.
